Applications are invited for a self-funded, 3-year full-time or 6-year part time PhD project.
The PhD will be based in the School of Mathematics and Physics, and will be supervised by Dr Vincenzo Tamma.
The work on this project could involve:
- Quantum networking (protocols and implementation/architectures)
- Quantum sensing based on multi-photon interference
- Quantum optical communication methods with entangled sources, including satellite-based quantum networks and quantum optical based time distribution using nano- or micro-sized satellites
- Long distance communication schemes with thermal light
The overall field of quantum information science has reached an enormous progress establishing a quantum era where practical applications ranging from information security and finance to quantum communication, quantum sensing and pharmaceutical industry are already within reach.
This program aims to introduce novel protocols for quantum networking based on the use of multiphoton networks with either thermal sources or entangled photons with the potential to immediately impact the development of quantum sensing and communication technologies beyond any classical capability on an industrial scale. This will be possible by taking advantage of 鈥渁d hoc鈥 interferometric schemes and correlation measurements with experimentally feasible and scalable resources.
The PhD student will benefit from the experience of the supervisory team in quantum information processing and from the international and interdisciplinary environment within the Quantum Science and Technology Hub (QSTH) at the 小蓝视频, including a highly interactive research group in quantum technologies and quantum optics led by Dr. V. Tamma, QSTH founding director, and the established successful collaboration with the group of Prof. Facchi at the University of Bari, leading expert in quantum information processing, as well as the recent collaboration with Dr. James Troupe, Chief Quantum Scientist at Xairos, a US company soon to have also an office in the UK. A collaboration agreement between UoP and Xairos has being finalised.
Our project partner, Xairos is specialised in Quantum Time Synchronization for Secure Communications, including satellite-based quantum networks and quantum optical based time distribution using nano- or micro-sized satellites. Xairos will potentially contribute match funding toward the PhD bursary.
Entry requirements
You'll need a good first degree from an internationally recognised university or a Master鈥檚 degree in an appropriate subject. In exceptional cases, we may consider equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications. English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.
Highly talented and ambitious graduates with an excellent Master degree in Physics with strong interest in quantum optics, quantum information, and quantum technologies.
