Modules

Each module on this course is worth a certain number of credits.

In each year, you need to study modules worth a total of 120 credits. For example, four modules worth 20 credits and one module worth 40 credits.

What you'll study

Core modules

With ethical foundations, you’ll apply tools spanning surveys, ethnography and data analytics to best inform responsible segmentation, targeting and positioning - while advancing visualisation skills to communicate insights and persuade executive teams. This module provides the core training needed to keep the voice of diverse consumers and people’s wellbeing at the centre of modern brand growth strategies.

By adopting an audience-centric mindset, you'll actively apply creative processes and emerging technologies, from photography to augmented reality, to convey compelling brand visions across platforms. With legal and ethical insight, you'll shape authentic content and interactive experiences that inform, inspire and engage diverse communities.

Students delve into the realms of debate and critical thinking in the context of marketing and International Business studies.

In this module, students engage in a collaborative virtual project with peers from partnering international universities. This experience allows students to enhance their virtual collaboration skills, cultivate cross-cultural awareness and hone their interpersonal communication abilities — essential for their future in business.

The module tutors act as personal tutors, supporting students in their progress and welfare requirements. The skills and knowledge gained in this module directly complement other core modules studied in the first year along with fostering important employability and career management expertise.

The aim of this module is to ensure that students understand the fundamentals of digital marketing and its role in marketing decision making. The module also seeks to provide students with an understanding of digital analytics and their role in developing successful digital marketing strategies. Finally, the module seeks to develop practical digital marketing skills that are useful in the workplace. As a core module to the Digital Marketing programme lays a foundation of the knowledge, understanding and skills that are necessary for success in this area and therefore maps to Hallmarks 1, 2, 3, 6 , 8, 9 and 11 of a UoP graduate. Several of these elements will be developed upon throughout the Course.

Discover marketing's vital role in organisational strategy and decision-making. You'll explore concepts like environmental analysis, segmentation and positioning, and learn how to identify opportunities and issues in a company's situation. With assessments that focus on applying models to real companies, you'll get hands-on practice conducting audits, developing plans and advising on marketing activity.

Core modules

The module will develop creative design and digital skills development and enhancement, with an emphasis on educational technologies to assist core and future skills for employability success.

The module emphasises a practical and creative approach, offering a blend of theoretical concepts and hands-on experience. Through workshops and practical assessments, students will develop the skills and knowledge required to produce responsible, sustainable, and ethical marketing messages, campaigns, and brand guidelines, thereby building a diverse portfolio of creative materials suitable for the workplace.

Furthermore, students will harness their understanding of the customer and the market to craft data visualisations that simplify complex information and empower users to interact with data effectively.

The final assessment artefact on this module is linked to work undertaken by students on the non-credit bearing module Employability and Professional Development.

You’ll sharpen your skills in SEO and paid search, tailoring integrated organic and sponsored strategies to sustainably acquire and retain communities aligned to commercial objectives. With creativity and responsibility, you’ll practice ethical approaches optimising investment effectiveness across owned properties and online marketplaces.

Students are provided with an overview of academic research methods and then have the opportunity to apply this knowledge by undertaking a practical piece of research for a live client. This module addresses UoP Hallmarks 1-10.

The module has a strong practical focus and enables students to apply marketing theory and practical skills to build their creative portfolio and enhance their practical digital marketing skills ready for the workplace. It addresses all UoP Hallmarks 1-11.

Optional modules

Explore event theories and planning models as you develop theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills for successfully planning, marketing and executing events. Through group projects that mirror the way you'll work in industry, you’ll explore a range of event types and tailor your marketing plans to suit their needs — whether for business, cultural, or sporting events.

Apply your learning in a diverse team with students from an overseas partner University. You'll build your sensitivity, communication and project management skills so that you finish this module prepared to work in international business.

Gain hands on experience putting theory into practice, and using product management tools and frameworks to develop your own creative new product idea. With assessments centered on analysing real organisations, you’ll evaluate decisions related to resourcing, positioning and launch - leaving you equipped to prepare watertight business cases for investment. Upon completion, you'll have the strategic vision and product innovation skills to help brands create a portfolio of profitable new products.

You’ll examine communication techniques and crisis response protocols through an ethical lens — making sure to balance transparency, advocacy and strategy. You’ll recommend improvements to reputation management processes by considering lobbying, campaign development and metrics to evaluate effectiveness.

Core modules

You'll develop analytical abilities and critical thinking as you dive deep into an academic or industry topic. With structured support, such as workshops, seminars and 1:1 appointments, you'll formulate intriguing research questions, engage meaningfully with literature, and select appropriate methods. This module cultivates an enterprising spirit as you tackle new territories beyond textbook learnings. The highlight is conceiving and executing your own investigation to derive impactful conclusions. You'll reflect on each step while adhering to research ethics, ultimately producing a dissertation that demonstrates intellectual curiosity and creativity. Join us to showcase your passion through an inspiring piece of work!

Consider data science's role in wider marketing, and its disruptive implications across industries, as you build your data analysis skillset. You'll explore big data concepts from mining to ethics, and produce data-led solutions to real business challenges. By the end of this module you'll be ready to confidently examine datasets, draw powerful insights and communicate compelling data stories.

Within a series of practical workshops, students will learn about key tools and technologies that can be used to engage an audience and how to identify, understand and evaluate key digital marketing metrics. Students then use this knowledge to critically evaluate a case study data set and make practical, responsible and ethical recommendations for the organisation. This module has a strong practical focus and seeks to further develop cognitive, practical and transferrable digital marketing skills. It addresses UoP Hallmarks 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11.

This module incorporates a Marketing Simulation game that allows you to test your marketing knowledge and compete with peers in groups to see who can most successfully run a business. You'll use this opportunity to develop a strategic approach to planning business development and then reflect on the outcomes to build their understanding of marketing strategy.

Optional modules

The module explores challenges faced in advertising, and in doing so links to other areas of the curriculum such as branding and ethics. Students will discuss the different objectives of advertising campaigns and the different media that can be used in achieving this. The module addresses the UoP Hallmarks 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Assessment for this module requires students to review and reflect on current industry practice which requires application of knowledge and enables development of cognitive and transferable skills.

Examples of past projects are: developing options for a bank for use of their banking halls for community financial education; creating a strategy for a facilities management firm to improve their marketing; helping a social enterprise to find ways to grow their user base with new service offerings. You'll develop skills in teamwork, project management, design thinking and consultancy, and learn to practically apply business concepts from across your degree studies. After an introduction to the organisation, your client will provide ongoing direction and guidance, and you'll be giving them regular progress updates. For most of the time, you'll be part of an independent, diverse team, managing priorities to achieve the project aims. You'll be supported throughout the module by your seminar tutor. Much of your learning will be off-campus, meeting key stakeholders and conducting tasks such as customer surveys and interviews. We encourage an experimental and entrepreneurial approach, and you'll learn key skills in the seminars and online lectures. The coursework is a mix of 60% group work and 40% individual assessment.

Exploring the models and best practices related to ideation, development and launch, you’ll understand the processes that bring ideas to market. Analysing factors from sustainability to globalisation, you’ll tackle the contemporary issues impacting development in the modern landscape. This module will equip you with understanding to give you a cutting edge in the jobs market. With assessments focused on addressing real-world cases, you'll boost your strategic skills to manage initiatives smoothly from vision to rollout, leaving you prepared to champion disruption responsibly across industries ahead.

Explore how brands, communications and incentives can alter behaviours from sustainability to social justice. With a focus on ethical issues, you'll evaluate tactics to encourage conscious consumption and civic action, and learn to develop hard-hitting campaigns that confront to some of society's most pressing challenges. This module empowers you to pursue purpose as well as profit, and prepares you to use your marketing skills as a force for good.

You'll spend your working industry, with support from our Placement Office.

How you'll spend your time

One of the main differences between school or college and university is how much control you have over your learning.

We use a blended learning approach to teaching, which means you’ll take part in both face-to-face and online activities during your studies.  As well as attending your timetabled classes you'll study independently in your free time, supported by staff and our virtual learning environment, Moodle.

A typical week

We recommend you spend at least 35 hours a week studying for this degree.

Your total study time will depend on the modules that you take, but in your first year this is what your week may look like:

  • timetabled teaching activities (lectures, seminars, tutorials, classes and workshops) = about 13 hours a week
  • independent study (research, reading, coursework and project work, alone or in a group) = about 22 hours a week

You'll probably do more independent study and have less scheduled teaching in years 2 and 3, but this depends on which modules you choose.

Term dates

The academic year runs from September to June. There are breaks at Christmas and Easter.

See term dates

Supporting you

The amount of timetabled teaching you'll get on your degree might be less than what you're used to at school or college, but you'll also get support via video, phone and face-to-face from teaching and support staff to enhance your learning experience and help you succeed. You can build your personalised network of support from the following people and services:

Types of support

In addition to the support you get from your personal tutor, you'll also have access to our student engagement officers. They can give you confidential, impartial advice on anything to do with your studies and personal wellbeing, and refer you to specialist support services if you need extra help or support.

You'll have help from a team of study support tutors. Based within the Faculty of Business and Law, these tutors are familiar with the specific requirements your assignments and work closely with faculty academics. This means they can give you focused support with the specific study skills you need to be successful on your course. They're available face-to-face, by phone, email, and by video call.

They can help with:

  • Academic writing (for example, essays, reports, dissertations, projects and literature reviews)
  • Reflective writing skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Delivering presentations (including observing and filming presentations)
  • Understanding and using assignment feedback
  • Managing your time and workload
  • Revision and exam techniques

If you're a mature student, specialist support to help you return to learning is available.

During term time, Faculty Academic Skills Tutors (AST) are available for bookable 1-to-1 sessions, small group sessions and online sessions. These sessions are tailored to your needs.

Support is available for skills including:

  • University study
  • Getting into the right study mindset
  • Note-taking and note-making skills
